Launched in 2002, ESONET CA project made the first assessment of available European capacity in ocean observatories. Potential stakeholders were identified and several sites with specific interest have been chosen. This allowed to define a first level of configuration for the observatory nodes. Moreover, contacts have been established with non-European institutions that were working on similar initiatives.
Final report of ESONET CA has been published in 2007 under the coordination of Monty Priede of Aberdeen University (Scotland).
